Relates to a labelling machine in which pressure pads simultaneously apply labels to opposite faces of an article. According to the invention, two pressure pads 23, 24, Fig. 8, with suction apertures are hinged together at 28, the pad 24 being movable between a position in which both pads are co-planar for simultaneously receiving two labels L from a pick-up member 55 and a position in which the pads 23, 24, Fig. 10, are face-to-face but spaced apart so that the labels are applied to opposite faces of an article 2 by inward movement of the pads. The movement of the pad 24 also causes a clamp 63 to engage the top 64 of the article during application of the labels. As shown in Fig. 1, the articles 2 are fed on a conveyer 1 via a pocketed disc 7 to a rotatable delivery member 9 from which they are taken by a discharge disc 10 and fed back to the conveyer, the articles with the labels thereon then passing between two endless pressing belts 14. The delivery member 9 carries six radial bracket arms, each having a pair of pressure pads located above an annular support plate 26. Labels are taken from a magazine 57 by a pick-up drum consisting of upper and lower sections of spaced discs 55, Fig. 8, previously gummed by a gumming roller 56, Fig. 1, the labels being transferred by suction to the coplanar pressure pads at position B of the member 9. At subsequent positions the article is introduced, the movable pad moves downwardly, the clamp is applied and the labels applied to the article. In the envent of omission of an article on the conveyer a detector device 66, Fig. 1, serves to move the gumming roller 56 and label magazine 57 to retracted positions.
