[Also in Division D1] The soleplate 1 of a steam iron has an elongated sheathed type heating element 42 with a helix of variable pitch to give variable heat output per unit length, whereby the total heat generated in the front half of the soleplate 1, where a flash boiler 34 for producing steam is located, exceeds that in the rear half. The prior art includes a steam iron with a helix heating element like 42 except that the pitch is larger at the nose than in the rear of the iron.
