Abstract

955,822. Testing microwave systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 27, 1960 [Aug. 1, 1959], No. 26480/59. Heading H4L. [Also in Division G1] An apparatus for detecting leaks in highpower microwave systems comprises a waveguide section 1 having a closed end 2 and an open end 3 which may be closed completely or opened to any desired extent by a variable selfclosing shutter 5. A crystal detector 9 is contained in a waveguide stub 6 and is connected to a conductor 10 which passes through an oppositely disposed waveguide stub 11 of conical door knob form serving as a low pass filter for frequencies below 9 kmc/s. The end of the stub 11 is connected via a coaxial cable 13 to the input of a transistor amplifier 20, 21, supplying an indicator meter 28. The waveguide section 1 is in the form of a pistol barrel provided with a trigger (not shown) initial pressure on the trigger operating switches 25, 31, the shutter remaining closed to allow zero setting of the meter by the potentiometer 24, and continued pressure progressively opening the shutter. In use the open end 3 of the waveguide section is pointed at a suspected leakage point the variable shutter acting as a sensitivity control. The amplifier, meter, and batteries are all enclosed in the pistol device.
