Abstract

A process for the preparation of metal borides, including mixtures of borides, comprises reacting at least one metal component selected from metals of Group IIB, IVB and VB of a specified Periodic chart, including the rare earths, and the actinide elements 90 to 94, and also Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr and W, and the alloys, halides, sulphides and oxides of these metals, with a boron component selected from elemental boron, metal borates and halides, oxides and hydrides of boron, under an inert atmosphere and at a temperature of at least 1500 DEG F. (except in the case of nickel when the temperature is at least 1200 DEG F.), while said reactants are contacted in a molten alkali metal selected from metallic sodium, potassium and mixtures thereof, and separating the metal boride so formed from said alkali metal, e.g. by filtration, distillation of the menstruum, or methanol digestion. Where the reaction temperature is in excess of the boiling-point of the metal menstruum superatmospheric pressure is maintained above the menstruum. A molten flux, e.g. NaCl, may be used to aid solution of the reactants. The borides produced by the process are microcrystalline and have an average particle size of less than 10 microns. Many specific reactants are mentioned, and the process is extensively exemplified.
