Abstract
A surface active composition comprising a mixture of poly(alkyleneoxy) compounds of the formula: <FORM:0955710/C3/1> where B is R3O- or R4NH2 one of R1 and R2 is hydrogen and the other methyl, R3 is a C4 to C18 alkyl substituted phenyl radical or a straight or branched chain C8 to C18 alkyl radical, R4 is a straight chain C8 to C18 alkyl radical, (CH2CH2O)m is a chain of ethyleneoxy units and <FORM:0955710/C3/2> is a chain of propyleneoxy units, m the average number of ethyleneoxy units being from 15 to 45, n the average number of propyleneoxy units being from 15 to 67.5 and the ratio of m to n being from 1.1 to 1.5:1 are made by reacting in the presence of a basic catalyst, 1 mole of a compound BH with firstly 15 to 45 moles of ethylene oxide and then with 15 to 67.5 moles of propylene oxide, the amounts of ethylene and propylene oxide being such as to attain the above defined ratio in the product. The examples describe the preparation of surfactants from:-(1) to (3) nonyl phenol; (4) tridecyl alcohol; (5) n-docecylamine and (6) octyl phenol.
