Abstract
<PICT:0955580/C3/1> The formation of ice and/or solid hydrocarbon hydrates during the cooling of fluid mixtures containing liquid hydrocarbons and water to below the freezing point of water is prevented by adding sufficient ammonia to the system to obtain an ammonia-water solution which is liquid at the temperature and an ammonia-hydrocarbon solution in equilibrium with the ammonia-water solution. The process is of particular value when cooling and compressing normally gaseous hydrocarbons prior to distillation and in the pretreatment of pyrolysis gases containing acetylene with cold naphtha to cool and dry the gas and to remove C3 and higher unsaturated hydrocarbons prior to recovery of the acetylene by absorption, e.g. in liquid ammonia. The amount of ammonia required to prevent freezing is shown by the ammonia-water phase diagram of Fig. 2 in which the area K represents conditions in which no solid is present.
