Class 8(2) [Alsa in Group XXI] A fuze for a non- metallic land mine comprises a detonator 10, a striker 8, and an ampoule 6 adapted, when fractured, to release gas under pressure, the gas serving to drive the striker towards the detonator. shell and is 'The ampoule has a frangible shell and is made by introducing into the shell a substance or mixture of substances in a condensed state, the substance or substances being such as to enable the gas to be generated after the shell has been closed; the quantity of gas and the rate of generation can be controlled externally. In a particular example, a predetermined volume of commercial hydrogen peroxide of 100 volumes concentration is introduced into a glass ampoule, the quantity being sufficient to produce the required pressure. The ampoule is then cooled to 0‹C. and its contents alkalised, and the neck of the ampoule is then welded by flame. Subsequently the ampoule is immersed in a water bath and brought to a temperature of 40‹C., this serving at first to initiate and later to restrain the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide. A suitable gas pressure is within the range of 1 to 30 atmospheres. Specification 765,931 [Group XXI], is referred to.
