[Also in Division F1] A method of inflating an inflatable device comprises generating hot combustion gases under pressure in a confined zone, mixing the gases in the zone with another gas under pressure and a liquid having a high latent heat of vaporization to increase the pressure of the other gas and at the same time vaporize the liquid, releasing the gaseous mixture from the zone and introducing it into the inflatable device. A gas generator 11 supplies gases through a conduit 12 to an inflatable device. The gas generator 11 comprises a container 15 holding pressurized carbon dioxide or compounds such as ammonia, ethane, propylene and nitrous oxide having a comparable expanded volume to weight ratio, and a liquid such as ethyl alcohol having a high latent heat of vaporization. A chamber 19 contains a combustible charge 20 such as potassium perchlorate which when ignited by an electrically actuated squib 21 bursts disc 23 to discharge hot gases through a passage 22 to vaporize the alcohol and mix with the carbon dioxide or other compound. A disc 18 bursts to discharge the hot gaseous mixture through a conduit 12 to the inflatable device. In so doing the gases expand and are cooled. To further cool the gases ambient air may be introduced into conduit 12. A safety blow-out disc 24 is provided in the wall of container 15. Quantitative figures for the combustible material &c. are quoted.
