Abstract

955,578. Feeding webs. P.C. RIEGGER. Feb. 7,1962 [Feb. 8,1961], No. 4639/62. Heading B6B. To a moving web, whose tension is varied by a preceding operation, there is first imported a first uniform tension independent of the final tension required, then a second uniform tension dependent on the final tension, by means of an adjustable brake, the addition of these two tensions resulting in the final tension at the entry of the web into the subsequent operation. A web travelling from a roll 1 to an operating machine 6 is first fed by a pair of rollers 7, 71 at the same linear speed as that of the operating device 6. A movable roller 8 imparts the first uniform tension to the web, and a brake roller 11 co-operating with an elastic roller 12 imparts the second uniform tension. A variable resistance torque opposes the rotation of the brake roller 11 and may be supplied by an hydraulic or pneumatic circuit or by an electric apparatus (none illustrated). An hydraulic circuit may comprise a pump which forces a fluid through an adjustable spring-load valve. Movement of the roller 8 may be utilized to control the speed of rollers 7, 7<SP>1</SP> to avoid any difference of speed between the rollers and the operating machine 6, by switching on and off an electric motor which drives part of a differential gear in the drive transmission of the rollers 7, 71.
