Abstract
955,559. Reciprocating motors. BULOVA WATCH CO. Inc. Aug. 31, 1961 [Jan. 19, 1961], No. 31417/61. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions G3 and G5] A tuning fork structure, for an electronicallycontrolled time-piece comprises a pair of tines 15, 16 connected by a base 17 which has an integral mounting stem 18, the junction of the stem 18 and base 17 being constructed at 18a to provide a resilient spring mounting, the stem 18 extending upwardly from the base and being situated between the tines. Each tine carries a movable magnetic element of a transducer 21 comprising the magnetic element formed by a cylinder 21a having a permanent magnet rod 21b supported coaxially therein to define an air gap wherein a stationary coil is mounted, the rod and coil being correspondingly tapered to accommodate the greatest number of coil turns at a position of maximum flux density. An electronic drive circuit of the tuning fork comprises a transistor 39 of which the base electrode B is coupled through an R-C bias network 40-41 to one end of a phasesensing coil 23 associated with the transducer of one tine 15, the other end of this coil being connected to one end of a drive coil 22 in series with a drive coil 26 of the other transducer which is led to the collector electrode C of the transistor. The emitter electrode E goes to a battery 30 which connects with the junction of drive coil 22 and phase-sensing coil 23. The polarity shown is for a Germanium PNP type junction. A capacitor 42 across the phasesensing coil through battery 30 shorts out parasitic currents. In practice the back e.m.f. in the drive coils has a peak valve about 10% less than battery voltage so that the amplitude of the tines is controlled towards a desired value and within limits which normally do not affect the drive to a time train 12. The fork is tunable by a rotatably adjustable mass 31 carried with each magnet from the ends of the tines. As further disclosed, in a circular timepiece electric components are mounted in sub-assemblies on opposite sides of the tuning fork, the tines being bowed inwardly to allow room for assembly.
