Abstract

955,468. Rollers. KIMBERLEY-CLARK CORPORATION. April 14, 1960 [April 15, 1959], No. 13525/60. Heading F2U. [Also in Divisions D2 and F4] A drier drum for a paper-making machine comprises a generally cylindrical shell, and an inlet and an outlet for the supply and withdrawal of heating fluid to and from its interior. The shell has a diameter of several feet and a length of several feet and is crowned so that its diameter progressively decreases along a very gradual curve by a small fraction of an inch on each side of its centre line up to points (d1, Fig. 6) about twenty inches inwards from the ends, then continues to decrease progressively along a continuation of the curve by a greater fraction of an inch from those points to further points (d2) about six inches inwards from the ends, and thereafter decreases progressively by a still greater fraction of an inch over the last six inches at each end. The shell may be a single casting, e.g. of cast iron, or made from plates, e.g. of aluminium-bronze, welded together as shown in Fig. 4. As shown in Fig. 3, the ends of this shell are closed by heads 15 and mounted on a hollow shaft 16, fitted with steam nozzles directed towards the inner surface of the shell and scoops collecting condensate and discharging it through the shaft. The shell may be crowned by grinding it under actual or simulated service conditions; i.e. by applying steam under pressure to the interior of the drum, and a cooling medium to that part of the drum that is covered by the wet paper web in service. This cooling may be effected by winding a strip of open-mesh cloth over the central portion of the drum and spraying water on to the cloth. The end portions, not covered by the cloth, are then ground, e.g. by an abrasive belt. The result of this crowning is that when the drum is in use, and its end portions are heated by steam to a higher temperature than that of the central portions cooled by the wet web upon it, the diameter of the end is, as shown by curve C in Fig. 6, no greater than that of the central portion and wear on these ends is therefore reduced. Specification 634,245 is referred to.
