[Also in Division D2] A drum, for use in a drier of a paper-making machine together with a doctor blade bearing on its surface, comprises a generally cylindrical shell made of a metal or alloy having a relatively low resistance to wear, in which the end portions only of the shell have annular surfaces made of a harder and more wearresistant material than the metal or alloy of the shell, so that the doctor blade is prevented from wearing down or gouging out the surface of those end portions. As shown in Fig. 7, rectangular plates of aluminium bronze are cut at an angle and then welded together to form parallelogram-shaped pieces. Several of these are welded together edge-to-edge, rolled into cylinder form and welded to form the shell 15. It is then heat-treated to reduce the differences in mechanical properties between the plates and the welds, and may be crowned. Circumferential grooves are cut near the ends of the shell, either before or after its formation into a cylinder, and filled with harder metal 61, e.g. welding metal or chromium, by welding or spraying, or rings of harder material may be slipped over the ends of the shell. As shown in Fig. 3, the shell so made is closed by heads 17 and mounted on a shaft 18. This shaft comprises two axially aligned, hollow sections 21 and 22 separated by a plate 23. Nozzles 26 are threaded into openings 25 in the plate and so distribute steam from the cavity 27 of the section 21 to the cavity 28 of the drum. Two scoops 29, mounted on pipes 30 collect condensate.
