Abstract
<PICT:0955446/C3/1> In a method of making a cathode, an electron-emissive film 2 is formed on a flexible carrier foil 3 and is applied, together with the foil, to a cathode core. The carrier foil may be produced from a solution comprising 24 gms. of dinitro-cellulose, e.g. soluble gun cotton, 200 ml. of butoxyl, 400 ml. of butyl acetate, 200 ml. of butyl glycol, and 200 ml. of polyacrylic acid ester 40% dissolved in xylene. The emissive film may be produced from a suspension of alkaline earth carbonates, of grain size less than 6m , with a binder content of 2 to 2.5% by weight of a dinitrocellulose, in the above solution. The foil 3 or film 2 are formed successively by feeding the appropriate solution through a capillary nozzle 4 in the form of an elongated slit having a width of 0.3 mm. to form a foil 3, 8 to 10m thick, and a width of 0.1 to 0.13 mm. to form film 2. The foil 3 may be detached from the base, by immersion in water, prior to formation of film 2, but is preferably detached afterwards and after drying in air at 100 DEG C.
