Abstract

1336164 Gelatine AGFA-GEVAERT 26 April 1971 [14 May 1970] 23431/70 Heading C3H [Also in Division G2] A coating aid in a composition comprising a hydrophilic colloid such as gelatine is an ester of a saturated polycarboxylic acid containing at least 4 carboxylic acid groups with a non-ionic surface active agent containing at least one hydroxy group, said polycarboxylic acid being a sulphonic acid or sulphonate derivative of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid prepared by heating an alkaline earth metal citrate at a temperature of 230-400‹ C. until an increase in titratable alkalinity of the reaction mixture is obtained and until not more than 32% of the original citrate remains. Sulphonation may be effected before or after esterification. The surface active hydroxy compound may be polyethoxylated alkylphenol, polyethoxylated aliphatic monohydric alcohol, or aliphatic carboxylic acid polyethylene ester. The carboxylic acid groups not esterified by the surface active hydroxy compound may be in acid, salt or ester form. Ester linking may be effected with diethylene glycol. The coating forms a photographic layer optionally containing silver halide. 0À01-2% of sulphonate based on colloid may be employed. Saponin, polyethoxylated nonylphenol, dialkylsulphosuccinic acid salt, alkyl sulphuric acid salt, alkyl sulphonic acid salt, or alkylaryl polyether sulphonic acid salt may also be present.
