Abstract

954,783. Friction clutches. DANA CORPORATION. March 27, 1963 [April 6, 1962], No. 12202/63. Heading F2C. A double clutch comprises a driving member having first 30 and second 32 engaging faces and a first 18 and second 20 pressure members drivingly connected to the driving member and adapted to be resiliently biased into driving engagement with driven members 10, 14, means connected to the pressure members maintaining one pressure member as a stationary reaction member for the resilient bearing of the other pressure member to press the respective driven member into engagement with the driving member. The resilient means comprises springs 22 between the two pressure members 18, 20 which are in driving connection with a flywheel 26 and cover 28 through slots 29 and tongues 31, 33. The pressure members are actuated through pull rods 34 and push rods 44 connected through link mechanism 42, 50 respectively with a double acting thrust member 58. The link mechanisms are similar but of opposite hand and comprise actuating levers 52 engaged in a groove 57 in the thrust member 58 and pivoted at 55 to a cam-plate 72 and to the cover 28; the actuating levers having L-shaped apertures 60 for the reception of cam followers 62 carried in slots 66 in transfer levers 64 pivoted at 55 and connected at 73 to the push or pull-rods 44, 34. Movement of the lever 52 anti-clockwise causes similar movement of the transfer levers 64 through abutment of the followers 62 against the end of the aperture 60; the levers 64 pivoting about 55 to release the push-rod 44 from the pressure member 20 and allow rear clutch engagement under springs 22. Movement of the levers 52 in the opposite direction first causes the transfer levers to move the pressure member away from the driving member to release the clutch, then forces the cam follower 62 into a recess 76 in the cam member 72 to lock the transfer levers and pressure member to act as a stationary abutment for the springs 22 during engagement of the front clutch through similar movements of the lever system 42 in the opposite direction.
