Abstract
954,408. Manufacturing oil-filled cables. FURUKAWA DENKI KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Jan. 2, 1962 [Jan. 17, 1961], No. 108/62. Heading H1A. Oil filled cables are made by passing one or more taped cores from a revolving drum 3 in a vacuum chamber 2 through a pipe 8 in which a vacuum is also maintained to a press 7 where the metal sheath is applied, the filling oil being introduced while the core is still under vacuum. Fig. 2 shows the extrusion pressed detail. Initially the core is drawn from the vacuum chamber 2 by a pulling wire 9 and a lead sheath is extruded and collapsed around the pull out wire and a filling tube and valve 14 inserted into the sheath. Press 7 is then continuously operated to extrude the sheath and the sheathed core is wound on to a winding drum. When the sheath is complete a vacuum pump is attached to the trailing end and oil is introduced through valve 14 and permeates the cable the interior of which is at a vacuum. In a further arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) an oil reservoir is mounted on the winding drum so that impregnation takes place during manufacture.
