Abstract

453,481. Cables. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Feb. 8, 1935, No. 4120. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1934. [Class 36] [See also Group V] A cable or conductor has a water-tight jacket or sheath consisting of a self-supporting seamless tube which is unreinforced by any metal wire inserts and is corrugated annularly or helically with corrugations of a pitch not greater than the smaller external diameter of the corrugations, the jacket or sheath being formed of polystyrol or of other solid organic synthetic substances of a like nature thereto from a mechanical and electrical point of view and which contain the vinyl group. The jacket or sheath, which is formed by a pressing or extruding operation, may be first produced as a smooth tube and then corrugated, whilst still in the thermoplastic condition, by rolls, wire helices or other pressure bodies which may be heated and which are applied against the tube and rotated about the axis thereof. To reduce brittleness, the tube may be stretched before or after corrugation. The Figure shows apparatus for applying a jacket to a cable core. The core 1, provided with a metal band wrapping 2, passes through a press 11 out of the extrusion nozzle 12 of which the cable jacket 3 is extruded on to a short tube 13 extending from the nozzle 12 and surrounding the core 1. The extruded jacket is corrugated whilst traversing the tube 13 by a helical wire press screw 14 which is rotated around the tube 13 by a motor 15 and which tapers in diameter with increasing distance from the nozzle 12. The screw 14 has a short portion which extends beyond the tube 13 so as to press the jacket firmly on the core. The jacketed cable is wound on a take-up drum 16 which is driven synchronously with the screw 14. The tube 13 may be corrugated and driven in synchronism with the screw 14. Specifications 356,706 and 430,581 are referred to.
