Abstract

A non-aqueous phosphating solution comprises a halogenated hydrocarbon such as trichlorethylene or perchlorethylene, 1-20% by weight of a lower aliphatic alcohol containing 3-8 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. butyl alcohol, and an acid phosphate such as mono-methyl orthophosphate. Mild steel plates are immersed in the solution at 80-100 DEG C. for a period of 1-10 minutes. The Provisional Specification discloses a solution containing by weight 100 parts trichlorethylene, 2-5 parts acid mono-methyl orthophosphate and 10 parts butyl alcohol.
