Abstract
The invention comprises O-alkyl-S-phthalimidomethyl phosphonodithioates of the general formula: <FORM:0954271/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are the same or different and each is a C1-C4 alkyl group. They may be obtained by reacting in the presence of a basic condensing agent or N-halomethylphthalimide with an appropriate O-alkyl alkyl phosphonodithioic acid. The reaction is preferably effected by heating equivalent quantities of the reactants in a relatively inert normally liquid organic solvent in the presence of a tertiary amine as the basic condensing agent. Suitable solvents are liquid aromatic and saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and suitable basic condensing agents are basic organic amines specially tertiary amines (including heterocyclic tertiary amines), and inorganic basic compounds, e.g. alkali metal carbonates and hydroxides. The reaction may also be carried out in a medium such as pyridine or quinoline which functions both as a solvent and as a basic condensing agent. The products have pesticidal properties (see Division A5).ALSO:A method of killing pests comprises applying to a pest habitat a small but effective amount of an O-alkyl-S-phthalimidomethyl phosphonodithioate of the general formula <FORM:0954271/A5-A6/1> wherein R and R1 are the same or different and each is a C1-C4 group (see Division C2). The active ingredient may be in the form of a solution thereof in acetone and the solution may be diluted with water containing emulsifiers.
