Abstract

954,263. Motor driven winches. F. M. E. DELAMAIRE. Jan. 12, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961; Dec. 8, 1961], No. 1227/62. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] A winch drum 2 (Fig. 1) is driven through gearing 3 to 7 by a motor 8 which is rotated by propellant gases released by the ignition of a powder charge and emerging through nozzles 9, 10. This gives a high torque for a short time and makes the winch suitable (see Fig. 7) for rapidly moving a load 21 towards a supporting parachute 20 in order to cushion the ground impact of such load on landing. The winch may also be employed in the load cable of a parachute landing brake on an aircraft to augment its braking force. It may also be used per se as an aircraft launcher. The Specification gives examples of suitable powder charges for these applications. Construction of motor.-The nozzles 9, 10 may be integral with a rotatable combustion chamber 11 within which the charge is ignited by a primer 19. Alternatively (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) the chamber may be static and feed the propellant gases through a hollow shaft on which a hollow nozzle and carrier are rotatably mounted. The nozzles 9, 10 may be directed towards deflectors 15, Fig. 4, mounted on a disc 14. This disc may itself be rotatably mounted (see Fig. 5) and the rotation of both the nozzle carrier and the disc geared to the output shaft 6.
