Abstract
Completely expanded polyvinyl chloride foam materials having closed cells and containing not more than 10% by weight of volatile plasticizer are stablized by maintaining them at 35 DEG to 105 DEG C. for at least 24 hours. The heat treatment may be repeated at intervals with cooling in between. In examples (1) a sheet of polyvinyl chloride foam containing 35% dioctyl phthalate was maintained at 50 DEG C. for 5 days (2) a sheet of polyvinyl chloride foam with no plastizer was heated at 60 DEG C., for 4 days (3) a test element with 45% plasticer was heated 3 times at 50 DEG C., for 2 days each time. Foam materials containing more than 10% of volatile solvent, (e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone) must have their solvent content reduced by heating at low temperature, e.g. 25-30 DEG C., with ventilation before being treated according to the invention. The products have substantially constant volume even when subjected to strong fluctuations in temperature and are particularly suitable for buoyancy articles, e.g. life belts and life jackets.
