Abstract

Oriented films of crystalline vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride copolymers, in which the crystallites are oriented with their major axes parallel with the surfaces of the films, are dimensionally stabilized by heating them to a temperature between 125 DEG and 10 DEG C. below the softening point of the copolymer for 10-150 seconds while so securing the film as to permit 10-70 and preferably 30-50 per cent of the linear shrinkage in the direction of longitudinal and /or transverse restraint which the film would exhibit without restraint, cooling the film to at least 100 DEG C. under sufficient tension to prevent further shrinkage, and finally releasing the film. The invention is particularly applicable to plasticized films containing (apart from plasticizer) about 88-93 per cent of vinylidene chloride and 7-12 per cent of vinyl chloride. In an example a cut sheet of a film composed of a vinylidene chloride vinyl chloride copolymer plasticized with 7 per cent of its weight of di-(alpha-phenyl-ethyl) ether and having a softening point of 168 DEG C. is heated for 20 seconds in an oven at 140 DEG C. while fastened in a frame permitting 50 per cent of the normal linear and transverse shrinkage to occur and is removed from the oven and cooled to room temperature while still in the frame. The treated film shrinks less than 2 per cent when hung in an oven at 100 DEG C. for 30 minutes. Specification 692,430 is referred to.
