Abstract

953,981. Valves. F. E. SWAIN. March 4, 1963 [Feb. 2, 1962], No. 4009/62. Heading F2V. In a butterfly valve of the kind in which the spindle 10 for the butterfly 9 is angularly or axially offset with respect to an annular recess containing a resilient seating ring 7 so that the seating surface is unbroken, two walls 2, 3 of the recess, connected by a radiused corner, are formed in the main body part 1 and the third wall 6 is provided by an element 5 which is adjustable to squeeze axially the seating ring to adjust its internal diameter to obtain an interference fit between the ring and the butterfly. The ring, which may be of rubber or rubber nitrile and contain a metal reinforcing ring has a frusto-conical mouth at one or both sides and is a slide fit in the bottom of the recess before compression by the element 5 which may be screwed, as shown, or flanged and secured by set screws to the body part 1 with a spacer to determine the compression of the ring 7. Specification 926,341 is referred to.
