953,815. Controlling clutches. AUTOMOBILOVE ZAVODY NARODNI PODNIK. July 25, 1962 [July 28, 1961], No. 28673/62. Heading F2L. In a motor vehicle centrifugal clutch having additional control mechanism the rate of engagement is controlled by an hydraulic cylinder having a spring-loaded needle valve actuated by depression on a diaphragm and a non-return valve. The rate of engaging movement of a clutch thrust race 25, under the control of a vacuum servo diaphragm 15, is determined by the rate of flow of hydraulic fluid to a cylinder 1 through a fixed orifice 19 and a needle valve controlled orifice 18. The orifice 18 has a controlling needle 5 loaded to full open position by a spring 9 and urged towards closed position by a diaphragm 8 connected on its underside to the engine manifold depression. Rapid disengagement is provided by a non-return valve 6 allowing fluid from reservoir 10 to flow freely to the cylinder 1. Clutch engagements at small throttle openings are thus slow and at large openings fast. In a modification, the piston 2 is used as a master piston in an hydraulic clutch control servo system utilizing the reservoir 10 for both the engagement control and servo system fluid.
