A method of making a fibrous-fleece-based plate for offset printing comprises coating and impregnating one or both faces of a fibrous fleece of synthetic non-swellable fibres with a conventional coating substance, treating the surface of the coated fleece with an aqueous solution until the surface has acquired a hydro. philic character, whereafter the plate is dried without hardening. The fibrous fleece may consist of polyamide, polyacrylic or polyester fibres whilst the coating substance may be blanc fixe, China clay or calcium sulphate with a binder of casein, animal glue or carboxymethyl cellulose. The aqueous solution may contain metal or silicon compounds which are capable of forming isopoly bases or isopoly acids. Such compounds maybe basic aluminium acetate, iron oxychloride, silicic acid, ammonium molybdate, or, the chlorides, hydroxides or sulphides of aluminium, iron, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten. The aqueous solution, which may also contain surface-active substances, may consist of a solution in water of one or more binding agents such as alginic acid derivatives, aldehyde starch or an organic metallic compound. The agent or agents are each an alginic acid propylene glycol ester, zinc alginate or zinc ammonium alginate, or aluminium acetyl acetonate or tetra-n-butyl titanate to which may be added aluminium powder or finely divided silicic acid.
