Abstract

953,558. Grinding balls. S. MESSERSCHMIDT. May 1, 1961 [Oct. 22, 1960], No. 15766/61. Heading B3D. Balls are ground by arranging them in a work gap between spaced relatively rotating bodies 1, 2, Fig. 3, of which at least one is a grinding wheel, and a steadily moving additional member 8 whereby the bodies 1, 2 tend to rotate the balls about one axis and the member 8 simultaneously tends to rotate then about another axis. The member 8 is in the form of a friction surface which in Fig. 3 is moved in a straight line parallel to the generating lines of one of the bodies 1, 2 or of both such bodies when their generating lines are parallel. The member 8 in the embodiment of Fig. 4 is replaced by two oppositelydisposed members 9 and 10 or 9 and 11; the surfaces 9 and 10 or 9 and 11 may be moved in the same direction or in opposite directions provided their relative velocities are such as to ensure movement of the balls along the gap. The friction surface 8 may also be in the form of an endless band or two such bands corresponding to the members 9, 10 or 9, 11 may be provided; a single band 19, Fig. 11, may be arranged to bear against opposite sides of the balls by means of rigid supports 20, 21. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 the friction surface is in the form of a rotating ring 14 on which the balls are passed between the suitably contoured surfaces of the rotatory bodies 12, 13, and, if desired, oppositely-disposed rings 15, 16 or 15, 17 may be provided as shown in Fig. 9. In a further modification, the bodies 1, 2 act by their end surfaces on the balls and the friction surface is then formed by two concentric rings of which at least one is arranged to rotate.
