Abstract

1338317 Bearings NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 12393/71 Heading F2A A bearing for a rotatable shaft 1 comprises one or more rings 3 of silicon nitride located in bearing housings 4, 5 so as to be under compressive loading. Preferably a groove of semicircular or V-shaped cross-section is provided which engages the periphery of the ring. Two rings 4 may be provided each one located in a housing member, there being two housing members disposed on opposite sides of a fixed support 2 through which the shaft passes. Each ring is also received in a groove in each of two housing members carried by the shaft. Pads 6 of resilient material may be provided to load the rings.
