Abstract

953,368. Rolling annular bodies; grinding; machine tool details. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 16, 1962 [April 21, 1961], No. 14491/61. Headings B3B, B3D and B3M. An annular sealing face is machined on the flange 1 of an annular metal section, while the latter is mounted with the sealing face uppermost, by means of a tool 2 which is carried in a frame 4 of inverted U-shape arranged to be supported on the metal section by suspension rollers and traversed around it by a driving gear engaging a toothed track 5 fastened to the underside of the flange. The section is straddled by the frame 4 which is fitted with two bogies 7 for engaging the track 5 and a third bogey 9 co-operating with a side track 6 on the inner side face of the flange. The weight of the machine is supported on the section by spring-loaded rollers 15, 16 of which the roller 16 runs on the upper inclined face of the track 6. The track 5 is in the form of a flexible strip attached to the under face of the flange on spaced shims and at its periphery is formed with gear teeth cooperating with a worm driven by a squirrel-cage motor 10 which is supported between the bifurcated portions of one limb of the frame. Endwise support for the frame in a direction transverse to the axis of the tool is provided by a roller 13 engaging the inside of the flange and rollers 14 on the bogies 7. Instead of the machining tool 2 being a grinding wheel, as shown in Fig. 2, it may consist of a rolling tool 31, Fig. 6, mounted on a spindle 41 fixed in a guide 49 which is engaged by torque rods 32, 33 projecting from a plate 47 attached to one of the limbs of the frame 4.
