953,279. Can-carrying cartons. CONTAINER CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Aug. 3, 1962, No. 29881/62. Heading B8P. A can-carrying carton is preferably made from a single blank of paperboard and comprises handle forming panels 5, 5a, top panels 6, 6a, sides 7, bottom panels 8 and can chime engaging strips 13, 15 attached thereto. The blank is converted into a flat-form carton by gluing together handle panels 5, 5a and binding flaps 21, 23 hinged to top panel 6a over top panel 6 and gluing them thereto. The carton is erected by gluing together strips 13 (see Fig. 1) either before insertion of the cans or after wrapping the carton around them. The strips 15 which are narrower than strips 13 are folded over to lie substantially in face to face contact with strips 13 and retain in this position the lower chimes of the cans. Movement of the cans longitudinally of the carton is prevented by flaps 26 in the top panels and flaps 28 in the bottom panels. These flaps which hinge about lines 28 are arranged to fold inwardly and engage the chimes of cans at the ends of each row. A method of locating and marking out flaps 26, 28 is described.
