Abstract

Polymers of dienes are made by polymerizing an aliphatic hydrocarbon diene in an inert organic solvent, in a solvent to monomer ratio of zero to substantially 15% monomer content with a lithium-based catalyst, at a temperature between 0 and 110 DEG C., in the presence of a compound active in metalation reactions between the less reactive toluene and the more reactive acetylene. The lithium-based catalyst may be metallic lithium methyl, ethyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl n-hexyldecyl, allyl, methallyl, phenyl, tolyl, xylyl, or naphthyl lithium, lithium hydride, methylene dilithium and like alkylene dilithium compounds, 1, 4-dilithium benzene, 1, 5 dilithium naphthalene, 1, 2-dilithium -1, 3-triphenyl propane, 1, 3, 5-trilithium pentane, and 1, 3, 5-trilithium benzene. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, and dimethyl butadiene. The Specification contains a list of compounds active in metalation reactions selected from acetylenic compounds, methanes, and fluorene. The preferred compound is butyne-2.
