Abstract
952,587. Compressed air brakes; valves. GIRLING Ltd. April 19, 1960 [Jan. 17, 1959] No. 1811/59. Headings F2F and F2V. A compressed-air system for actuation of the brakes on a vehicle comprises a compressor 10 and a reservoir 12 in which air is maintained by the compressor at a pressure considerably higher than the working pressure for the braking system, in combination with a reducing valve, arranged between the reservoir 12 and the brake cylinder 13, which serves to reduce the pressure of the air supplied to the braking system to the normal working value. As shown, the reducing valve is incorporated in the driver's control valve and comprises a spring 24 which is compressed, on depression of pedal 14, on to the top cup member 25 of a piston 26. In the position shown, the cylinder 13 is in communication with the atmospheric port 22 via ports 40, 29. This communication is interrupted on downward movement of the pedal 14 when the port 29 is closed by the valve seat 30 on the spool valve 31. Further movement lifts valve seat 34 from the port to admit pressure fluid from port 33 and when a predetermined pressure is reached in cylinder 13, it is communicated via port 40 to the lower side of piston 26 to lift it against the spring 24 and permit spring 36 to close the valve 34.
