Abstract

1453715 Valves for fluid pressure braking systems BENDIX WESTINGHOUSE Ltd 10 July 1974 [11 July 1973] 32958/73 Headings F2V and F2F A relay valve, e.g. for controlling pressure to a trailer braking system, comprises a housing 1 with a cylindrical bore 2 in which pistons 3, 4, 12 are slidable pistons in response to control pressure supplied to at least one of input ports 13, 14, 15. Piston 4 has an extension 16 carrying a "self-lapping" valve closure member 17 which is biased by spring 18 away from a seat 19. The latter is carried by an exhaust tube 22 which also forms an inlet valve closure member biased against inlet seat 21 by spring 20 to prevent reservoir pressure applied to port 23 from communicating with a work port (not shown) disposed below piston 4 and connected to the trailer brakes. Thus when a control pressure is applied to ports 13, 15 by a foot operated valve or to port 14 by a secondary brake system, piston 4 is forced downwardly so that valve member 17 abuts seat 19 to close the exhaust passage and simultaneously unseat tube 22 to communicate reservoir pressure at port 23 to the trailer brakes via the work port. If the control pressure is reduced, piston 4 rises causing valve member 17 to lift off seat 19 to vent the brake cylinders to atmosphere until a lower pressure is present beneath piston 4, whereupon member 17 again closes the exhaust passage. The pistons 3, 4, 12 move individually or as a stack depending upon which control ports 13, 14, 15 are in use, and mutually guide one another by interfitting skirts 6, 8 provided with nylon packing 11 and seal rings 7, 10.
