Abstract

Hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide are obtained by reacting gaseous carbonyl sulphide with steam in the presence of a catalyst of one or more of alumina, silica, bauxite, fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, activated clay, or naturally active clay. The catalyst may be pretreated with water and then gradually heated. Preferably it is used in the form of a stationary bed of granules of size about 0.125 inch. The reaction may be at a temperature between 300 DEG and 700 DEG F. and at superatmospheric pressure, the gases being passed over the catalyst with a space velocity of between 100 and 5000 standard cubic feet of gas per hour per cubic foot of catalyst.ALSO:Carbonyl sulphide is removed from industrial gases by passing it with steam over a catalyst of one or more of alumina, silica, bauxite, fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, activated clay, or naturally active clay to produce hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide which are subsequently separated, by conventional means. The catalyst may be pretreated with water and then gradually heated. Preferably it is used in the form of a stationary bed of granules of size about 0.125 inch. The reaction may be at a temperature between 300 DEG and 700 DEG F. and at superatmospheric pressure, the gases being passed over the catalyst with a space velocity of between 100 and 5000 standard cubic feet of gas per hour per cubic foot of catalyst.
