In a refiner for breaking down fibrous material comprising a rotatable grinding disc 22 carried by a shaft 12 in a frame 10 and a rotationally stationary grinding disc 24, the disc 22 being axially displaceable and adapted to transmit grinding pressure towards the disc 24 by means of a servomotor 90, preferably hydraulic, the size of the gap between the discs is indicated by means of an optical measuring instrument having a plate 124 following the axial movements of the disc 22. The piston 94 of the servomotor transmits the grinding pressure to the disc 22 through rotationally stationary members including a member 118 with which the plate 124 is associated. The plate 124 is displaceably mounted in fixed guides 125, 127, Fig. 2, and has a transparent window 126 provided with a scale. A spring 129 maintains the plate 124 in continuous abutment against an adjustment screw 131 threaded into an arm 133 secured to the member 118. The measuring instrument further comprises an electric bulb 128 which directs a light beam through the window 126 and through a lens system carried by a casing 132 to a screen 134 provided with a scale. The invention is also stated to be applicable to conical refiners. Specification 761,179 is referred to.
