Abstract

952,244. Feeding webs. PHILLIPS & SONS (MANCHESTER) Ltd. Jan. 22, 1963 [Jan. 24, 1962], No. 2561/62. Heading B6B. [Also in Division D1] In a cloth laying up machine of the type in which the cloth is drawn from a lap or roll and laid on a table by delivery rolls carried on a carriage traversing the table, pairs of 'rollers are mounted to be capable of engaging the selfedges on each side of the cloth as it passes to the laying up table, the nip of one or other of the pairs of rollers being closed to engage the cloth on an deviation thereof from the desired track. In the arrangement shown cloth 1 is fed from a feed roll or lap around guide roller a, tension roller a<SP>1</SP>, over roller a2 driven at a greater speed than that of the cloth and thence vertically downwards and through a delivery slot a<SP>3</SP> so that it is layered on the table A<SP>1</SP> by the reciprocation of the carriage A. On the downward passage of the cloth its selfedges pass between two pairs of rollers b, B and b<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> one pair at each side of the material and arranged at an inclina tion to the direction of travel of the material 1. The rollers of each pair are mounted on brackets D, D<SP>1</SP> respectively one of each pair being mounted on respective flaps d, d<SP>1</SP> so that the rollers of each pair may be brought together to nip the material or separated to allow the material to pass therebetween. The rollers are brought together by the action of solenoids controlled by photo-electric cell C<SP>2</SP>. In operation, supposing the rollers b, B to have moved the cloth so that the selfedge covers the light beam from cell C<SP>2</SP> this will operate through a suitable relay system to de-energize the solenoid controlling rollers b, B to disengage them and energize the solenoid controlling rollers b<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> to bring them into engagement and so shift the cloth back. When the selfedge uncovers the light beam the reverse operations take place. In this way the cloth is always maintained in the correct position for layering. The light beam may be reflected a plurality of times through the cloth in the case of semi-transparent fabrics.
