Abstract

A coloured pharmaceutical tablet has a coating of coloured lactose hydrate particles bonded to its outer surface, and said particles comprise spray-dried lactose hydrate incorporating a water-soluble dye. The lactose powder is applied, e.g. by tumbling to the tablet coated with an edible adhesive such as sugar syrup. A composite coating is obtained by applying the adhesive syrup and coloured lactose hydrate successively, with drying after each powder application. In the example, the coating syrup consists of a solution of sucrose, gelatin and gum acacia in water and the lactose hydrate is coloured with yellow beta carotene dye. A finishing coat of carnauba wax and beeswax is applied.
