Abstract

Cis-polybutadiene is heated in the presence of an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide there being present 0.075 to 1.75 millimoles of peroxide per 100 grams cis-polybutadiene. Maleic acid or anhydride in amount from 0.015 to 1.2 parts per 100 polybutadiene may also be present. The preferred temperature of heating is 250 to 350 DEG F. while a long list of peroxides includes benzoyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide, dicumyl peroxide, 2-5-bis (t-butylperoxy)- 2-5 - di - methylhexane cumene hydroperoxide, p-chlorobenzoyl peroxide diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide and tert.- butyl hydroperoxide. A metal oxide e.g. zinc, magnesium or lead may also be present.
