Abstract

The invention comprises the compounds of formula: <FORM:0951986/C2/1> where R and R1 are each an unsubstituted or substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical or together form an alkylene bridge containing not more than 5 carbon atoms of which one methylene group may be replaced by oxygen, sulphur or secondary or tertiary amino, n is 0 or 1, and R11 is methyl when n is 0 or C1-4 alkyl when n is 1; and their production by reacting an amidinium salt of formula: <FORM:0951986/C2/2> where X is the anion of an inorganic acid, with an alcoholate of an alkanol containing 1-4 carbon atoms in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol containing 1-4 carbon atoms; the two alcohols may be the same. The preferred reaction temperature is from -40 DEG C. to +50 DEG C. R and R1 are preferably C1-4 aliphatic radicals, C5 or C6 cycloaliphatic radicals, phenyl or naphthyl, any of which may be substituted, e.g. by C1-4 aliphatic or alkoxy radicals, and halogen atoms; or make up e.g. morpholine, thiomorpholine, piperidine or pyrrolidine rings. X is preferably the anion of HCl, HBr, HI, HClO3, HIO3, HClO4 or H2SO4. Specified alcoholates are alkali metal alcoholates of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol and n-butanol. Examples and suitable starting materials are listed. The reaction between N-methyl morpholine and phosgene produces chloroformic acid 3-oxapentamethylene amide, which with N-formyl morpholine gives N,N,N1,N1-bis-(3-oxapenta-methylene)-formamidinium chloride.
