Abstract

The invention comprises a mixed ester of 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane in which two hydroxy groups are esterified with the same or two different straight chain C4-6 alkanoic acids and the other hydroxy group is esterified with a straight chain C7-10 alkanoic acid, the esters having a molecular weight of from 410 to 490. The invention also comprises the product obtainable by esterifying the triol with a mixture of about 2 equivalents of one or more of the C4-6 acids and about 1 equivalent of one or more of the C7-10 acids, the ester product having a molecular weight of from 410 to 490. The esters may be prepared by mixing the triol with the mixture of acids and then heating until reaction is complete or the triol may be reacted with one acid and the partial ester formed then reacted with the other acid or acids. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst or activated carbon. Examples describe the preparation of divalerate mono pelargonate, mono valerate mono caproate mono caprylate, dibutyrate mono pelargonate, divalerate mono heptanoate, divalerate mono caprylate and dicaproate pelargonate esters of the triol. The esters may be used in lubricating compositions (see Division C5). Specification 715,933 is referred to.ALSO:Lubricating compositions comprise a major proportion by weight of one or more esters of 1,1,1-trimethylol propane in which two hydroxy groups are esterified with the same or two different straight chain C4- 6 alkanoic acids and one hydroxy group is esterified with a C7- 10 straight chain alkanoic acid, the ester having a molecular weight of from 410 to 490. The esters may be in the form obtained by reacting the triol with a mixture of about two equivalents of one or more of the C4- 6 acids and about one equivalent of one or more of the C7- 10 acids, the product having a molecular weight of 410 to 490. The esters may be blended with mineral oils, other polyhydric esters or grease making soaps, and antioxidants, e.g. phenyl a -naphthylamine, phenothiazine or 2,21 dipyridylamine may be added.
