As the needle cylinder 3 rotates, pattern jacks 1, as they approach a feed, are rocked outwardly about their upper ends, by the surface 14 of a cam 16, selected jacks are thereafter returned to inoperative positions by cams 36 on pin drum-controlled levers 37 pivoted one above another on a port 38; and longitudinal movement of the returned jacks is prevented by interaction between cam faces 8 on the jacks and a conical taper 9 formed on the needle cylinder below the level of the jack tricks, whilst radially outward movement is prevented by the interior surface of the jack lifting cam 17 behind which lifting butts 12 of the jacks have passed. Butts 12 of those jacks not returned by levers 37 ride up cam 17 to such a height that, through intermediate jacks 28, the upper butts 31 of needle sliders 29 are brought safely above the point 35 of needle raising cam 34. During passage of the butts 12 over section 21 of cam 17, their lower and upper cams 5, 6, bear against the bottoms 7 of the tricks 2 and the inner circumferential faces of cam rings 18 and 27 respectively. Butts 12 of any jacks which have been incompletely returned by cams 36 will start to rise up cam 17 butt, between points 22 and 23 thereon, will be free to slide off the cam and return to inoperative position before they engage their jacks 28. Raised jacks are lowered again by cam 26 acting on their upper butts 13. On the return strokes of reciprocatory knitting, the jack ends 55 are moved outwardly by winding 15 of the cams 16, but are thereafter returned by surfaces 25 on the cams 17.
