Abstract

The invention comprises a mixture of polyamides formed from a polyalkylene polyamine containing 2-6 alkylene amine units with 2-4 carbon atoms in each alkylene group, and a mixture of 5-30 mole per cent of straight-chain fatty acids and 70-95 mole per cent branched-chain fatty acids, the acids containing 12-30 carbon atoms each, and the polyamides containing 1-3 amine groups. These products are obtained from the mixed acids and the polyalkylene polyamine in suitable proportions. Specified polyalkylene polyamines are diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine, hexaethyleneheptamine, tetrapropylenepentamine and hexabutyleneheptamine. Specified straight-chain acids are behenic, tridecanoic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, eicosanoic and triacontanoic acid. Specified types of branched-chain acids are oxidation products of olefins and polyolefins, oxidation products of oxo aldehydes, and hydrogenation products of polymerised unsaturated acids such as linoleic acid. The mixed amides of the invention are lubricant additives (see Division C5).ALSO:Lubricant compositions comprise a major proportion of a waxy mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a mixture of polyamides formed from a polyalkylene polyamine containing 2-6 alkylene amine units with 2-4 carbon atoms in each alkylene group, and a mixture of 5-30 mole per cent of straight-chain fatty acids and 70-95% mole per cent of branched-chain fatty acids, the acids containing 12-30 carbon atoms each, and the polyamide containing 1-3 amine groups (see Division C2). The polyamides have pour point depressing and detergent properties. They may also be added to hydrogen-based fuels of the type employed in internal-combustion engines and to gas oils.
