Abstract
Cyclohexanone oxime is recovered from a mixture containing nitrocyclohexane and cyclohexanone oxime by contacting the mixture with an aqueous solution of not less than 1 mole of an alkali metal hydroxide having a concentration of from 5 to 30% for each mole of nitrocyclohexane to form a water-soluble salt of the nitrocyclohexane and to precipitate cyclohexanone oxime, and separating the cyclohexanone oxime from the water-soluble salt of nitrocyclohexane, e.g. by filtration. The nitrocyclohexane may be recovered from the remaining solution by neutralising the water-soluble salt to form an aqueous layer and an oil layer of nitrocyclohexane and separating the nitrocyclohexane oil layer from the aqueous layer, e.g. by decantation. In a modification of the process the aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide comprises the aqueous portion of a two-phase system, the other phase being a water-immiscible solvent for cyclohexanone oxime; in this process the precipitated cyclohexanone oxime dissolves in the water-immiscible phase and is recovered therefrom Suitable solvents include benzene, n-heptane, hexane, toluene, xylene and cyclohexane. Sodium hydroxide is the preferred alkali metal hydroxide.
