Abstract

[Also in Division E2] A spring catch comprises a ball, roller or other catch member 12 having a forward convex portion which protrudes through a hole in a face plate 11, the hole being smaller than a rearward portion of the catch member which is urged into its protruding position by biasing means 13 contained in a housing 10, the housing having a part 14 adjacent the face plate which is secured in an associated recess 15 formed in the face plate, the latter being deformed to cause said part to be retained in assembled relation with the face plate. In the construction shown, the housing is cylindrical and the part 14 is a marginal portion which is outwardly flared although it could be at right angles if desired. The recess 15 is an annular groove and after the part 14 has been engaged with the groove 15, the external wall is rolled, spun or stamped into engagement with the part 14 to prevent separation of the housing and face plate by forming a further groove 17 coaxial with the groove 15 and of greater diameter. The inner wall of the groove 15 can be omitted if desired. Instead of forming a groove 17 additional material can be provided adjacent the external face of the groove 15 by locally increasing its thickness; the rolling, spinning or stamping operation moves this additional material into engagement with the part 14. Instead of the ball 12 which is shown, a bullet-shaped catch member can be substituted without further modification. Alternatively, a roller can be used in which case the hole in the face plate is made rectangular. The housing and recess can have a corresponding shape in which case if desired only two opposite faces of the recess need be moved into engagement with the housing part. Alternatively, the housing and recess can still be circular, but of greater diameter to completely accommodate the rectangular hole within their peripheries. In a further modification, the housing is of frusto-conical shape in which case the end of greater diameter constitutes the part engaged in the recess. In a still further modification, the housing can have a plurality of projections which are received in separate recesses; in this case the outer wall of each recess is deformed into engagement with its projection by centre punching. A rubber block can be substituted for the spring 13.
