Abstract
950,946. Period meters. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 13, 1961 [Oct.19, 1960], No. 35906/60. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G4] In a nuclear-reactor period meter comprising an ionization chamber 1 followed by a logarithmic amplifier 2 whose output is applied to a differentiating amplifier 3 to give an indication of reactor period on meter M, and in which differentiation in amplifier 3 is effected by means of series input capacitor C 1 and negative feedback resistor R 2 associated with a linear D.C. amplifier 4, the smoothing time-constant of the differentiating amplifier 3, which is provided by means of resistor R1 and capacitor C 2 , is varied in accordance with the output of the logarithmic amplifier 2 by means of a connection therefrom to a voltagesensitive resistance element 5 which determines the extent to which capacitor C 3 modifies the effective value of smoothing capacitor C 2 whereby the smoothing time-constant of the differentiating amplifier 3 is reduced as the output of the logarithmic amplifier 2 increases. In a preferred arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the resistance element 5 is constituted by a pair of silicon diodes so fed in push-pull by the output of amplifier 2 that their resistance falls as the output of the amplifier increases. Specification 906, 068 is referred to.
