Abstract

950,544. Making screwdrivers. REED & PRINCE MANUFACTURING CO. May 9, 1962 [Oct. 3, 1961; April 2, 1962], No. 17782/62. Heading B34. [Also in Division B4] The bit end of a screwdriver has a roughened surface produced by shot peening. As shown, the driving end of the shank 2 has four equally spaced vanes, the outer surfaces of which converge towards the tip. The side faces 8, 10 of each vane which are equally spaced respectively on opposite sides of a radius of the shank, are either parallel to each other or converge slightly towards the tip. After being shot peened, the side faces 8, 10 are scored with parallel lines 20, each of which preferably extends at approximately right angles to the axis of the shank 2 and which may extend entirely across or only partially across each side face. The entire bit end is then heated in a neutral salt in a gas fired pot furnace. Following the heat treatment the bit is again shot peened to increase the hardness of the outer surface. The first shot peening step and heat treating step may be omitted. Only some of the side faces of the tool bit may be treated.
