Abstract
949,801. Shearing; metal working presses. IAN HEATH Ltd. Aug. 7, 1962 [May 9, 1961], No. 16756/61. Headings B3H and B3W. In a power press comprising a table, a reciprocating tool slide and power energized driving means therefor, the supporting frame includes structurally separate upright girders forming the side members of the press, cross-bars connecting the side members to form a frame, guide bars for the slide mounted on the upright girders, and a pressure fluid-operated toggle mechanism for operating the slide. Each side member 10 comprises a pair of angle-sections 11 which are bolted at their lower ends to a baseplate 14 and are connected at their upper ends by a solid cross-bar 12. A subordinate crossbar 16 is adjustably supported from the bar 12 by a threaded rod 17, and carries rods 20 which pass through apertures in brackets 21 secured to the members 10 so as to be vertically adjustable. The brackets are connected by a tie-bar 24. An upper tool slide 31 is guided on posts 25 and is connected to the cross-bar 16 by a toggle mechanism comprising an upper plate 34 and a lower plate 35. A pneumatic piston and cylinder unit is connected to the central joint of the toggle and projects horizontally rearwards of the frame. The outer end of the unit is supported by tie-rods 47 projecting from the brackets 21 and connected to a cross-head 48, and by members 52 attached to the crossbar 16. The return movement of the slide is effected by compression springs 53 connected to the slide by pull rods 55. A counterbalanced panel 58 forms a guard member and is guided for vertical movement at the front of the frame. Mounted on the panel is a pivoted lifting handle which, when the panel is in its lowest position, registers with a control valve for the pneumatic unit, and can be pivoted to operate the valve. Automatic return of the slide may be arranged by mounting a trip valve in a position to be engaged by the slide 31 upon completion of the working stroke.
