Abstract

949,589. Welding by fusion. MUREX WELDING PROCESSES Ltd. July 18, 1962 [June 14, 1961], No. 21521/61. Heading B3R. An electrode for use in automatic or semi-automatic arc welding comprises as a core 10, a metal strip twisted about its longitudinal axis into a spiral configuration, a coating 11 containing an alloying element and/or a flux filling the convolutions in the core 10 but leaving its edges exposed and an external metal sheath 12 in electrical contact with the core 10 and having a narrow longitudinal gap 13. The gap 13 facilitates drying and inspection of the coating 11. The sheath 12 may have perforations opposite the gap 13. The strip forming the core 10 may have rounded corners. The electrode can be used for open arc, submerged arc or carbon dioxide or inert gas shielded arc welding and may deposit mild steel, low or high alloy steel, e.g. 18/8 stainless steel or hard facing metals. The alloying agents may be in one or more of the core coating and sheath. For welding alloy steels the coating may be as described in Specification 949,587. Specified coating constituents are pure metals, e.g. iron, chromium, ferro-alloys, carbon or carbonbearing metals, rutile, calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, sodium or potassium silicate and sodium alginate. The coating may be of low hydrogen lime-fluoride type.
