Abstract

A fluxless ferrous electrode for use in unshielded arc welding comprises 0.8-25%, Mg, 1.2-8% deoxidizing metal, 0.4-2.4% Mn and 0.1-1.01% Si. The deoxidizing metal is one or more of Al, Ti, Zr. The electrode may be a single alloy wire or strip; a mild steel tube filled with the following core mixtures:- <TABS:1079235/C6-C7/1> or a mild steel core with a coating of .Mg.40%.40% .Al.20%.- .Zr.-.10% .Ti.-.10% .Mn.15%.15% .Si.10%.10% .Fe.15%.15% In the latter case powdered coating metals are applied to the core using an adhesive and are fused in a furnace in an inert atmosphere.
