In a conveyer system in which load carriers are propelled along a track by dogs depending from a chain running along a vertically spaced track, a plurality of actuating elements, responsive to the presence of a carrier on the track, are each operatively associated with a carrier drive disengaging element situated in the position next in rear of the actuating element to disengage the drive from the next arriving carrier whereby advancing carriers are in turn brought to rest at spaced positions along the track in rear of the foremost stationary carrier. In the arrangement shown, load carriers 13 are propelled along a track 12 by pairs of vertically movable dogs 15, 16 depending from a chain 11 running along a track 10 and engaging a driving member 17. The carriers 13 are stopped at predetermined stations by an actuating element 38 supported from rocker arms 40, 41 connected to pivotally mounted spindles 37 vertically supported at the side of the tracks 10, 12 and carrying carrier drive disengaging elements 23 and stops 20. An actuating element 38 on being engaged by a leading carrier 13 is moved outwardly and forwardly to rotate a spindle 37 in the rear thereof to move a carrier drive disengaging element 23 and a stop 20 into the path of a succeeding carrier 13. The element 23 is engaged by a cam follower 32 to lift a dog 15 out of driving engagement with the driving member 17 of a succeeding carrier 13 and the stop 20 prevents further forward movement of such carrier 13, Fig. 2. The actuating element 38 and associated parts are returned to their inoperative position by a spring 42 once the leading carrier 13 moves out of engagement with such element 38.
