1275188 Conveyer systems STANDARD ALLIANCE INDUSTRIES Inc 7 July 1970 [3 Sept 1969] 33022/70 Heading B7L In a power and free conveyer system having movable work carriers 22 each provided with front and rear trolleys 24, 26, the drive chain 86 has a plurality of pairs of spaced drive lugs, one drive lug 92 of each pair being pivoted and cooperable with pivoted and counter-weighted flop dogs 34, 35 on the front trolley 24 to move the carrier, the other drive lug 94, which is shorter than lug 92, being fixed and co-operable with an abutment 110 on the rear trolley 26 to move the carrier, the arrangement being such that when the spacing between the drive chain 86 and the carriers 22 is increased by a predetermined amount, the fixed drive lug 94 is no longer engageable with the abutment 110, the pivoted lug 92 being engageable at all times with the dogs 34, 35. The pivoted and fixed lugs are spaced farther apart than the front and rear trolleys in each carrier so that in normal operation, with the lug 92 engaged with the front trolley, the fixed lug 94 is spaced behind the rear trolley so that if the front trolley should be accidentally disengaged from the drive chain, for example on an inclined section of track, the fixed lug 94 catches up the rear trolley, engages the abutment 110 and moves the carrier forwards. In certain sections of the conveyer system, for example in "close pack" areas, the spacing between the drive and carrier tracks is increased, as described above. On arrival at the "close pack" area, the first work carrier is automatically disengaged from the drive chain by known means. The following carrier bumps into the first carrier, and becomes disengaged of a cam-plate 58 on the rear trolley of the first carrier, succeeding carriers also being disengaged in a similar fashion, the carriers becoming "nested" together with the flop dog 34 of each inside a slot 66 in the cam-plate 58 of the preceding carrier. After some time, the first carrier will have been pushed by the following carriers through and out of the "close pack" area and will then automatically become reengaged with the drive chain, normal spacing between the tracks 10 and 12 being resumed at the end of the close pack section.
